Note: Prices shown include tuition, lodging, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meals generally begin with dinner the first night served at 5:30 pm and go through lunch on last day (Fire Instructor I and S-290 classes begin with lunch.) Vegetarian/vegan meals are available, if requested in advance.

32-hour class based upon IFSTA “Fire and Emergency Services Instructor,” 7th edition, designed to prepare the student to meet the job performance requirements (JPR’s) contained in NFPA 1041, Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications (2002) for the position of Fire Instructor, level I. This class is equivalent to NWCG’s M-410, “Facilitative Instructor.” Includes pre-course reading and project assignments.

(2004, 32 hours) S-130 is designed to provide entry level firefighter skills. Many of the units are set up so they can be taught in either the classroom or the field; field time is encouraged. A version of L-180, Human Factors on the Fireline and I-100, Introduction to ICS has been included as part of this course. Credit is issued for S-130, S-190, L-180, and I-100 upon completion of this course. S-190 provides instruction in the primary factors affecting the start and spread of wildfire and recognition of potentially hazardous situations. S-190 is typically taught in conjunction with or prior to Basic Firefighter Training, S-130. It is designed to meet the fire behavior training needs of a firefighter type 2 (FFT2) on an incident as outlined in the PMS 310-1, Wildland Fire Qualification System Guide and the position task book developed for the position.

S-131, (2004, 8 hours) Firefighter Type 1 Training, S-131, is an eight-hour course designed to meet the training needs of the Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1). This course is designed to be interactive in nature. It contains several tactical decision games designed to facilitate learning the objectives and class discussion. Topics include: fireline reference materials, communications, and tactical decision making.
Course prerequisites - Qualified as a firefighter, type 2 (FFT2)

S-133, (1992, 4 hours) This course examines the wildland fire environment and the indicators firefighters should observe on the fire line in order to anticipate fire behavior.

S-211, (2004, 24 hours) Portable Pumps and Water Use is an instructor-led course intended to be presented at the local level. The course consists of three skill areas: supply, delivery, and application of water. Students will be required to demonstrate their knowledge of correct water use, basic hydraulics, and equipment care. The field exercise requires set up, operation, and maintenance of pump equipment. To receive credit for this course, students must have field work observed and approved, and take a closed book written final examination.
Course prerequisites - None.

The NWCG course content will be supplemented with information from “The Campbell Prediction System” and Doug Campbell's CPS Solutions™ to tragedy fires.

S-212 Wildland Fire Chain Saws, $495

(2004) Wildland Fire Chain Saws, S-212, is an instructor-led course intended to be presented at the local level. The course lessons provide introduction to the function, maintenance and use of internal combustion engine powered chain saws, and their tactical wildland fire application. Field exercises support entry level training for firefighters with little or no previous experience in operating a chain saw, providing hands-on cutting experience in surroundings similar to fireline situations.
Course prerequisites - Qualified as a firefighter type 2 (FFT2); current certification in Basic First Aid and CPR.

S-230 Crew Boss & S-231 Engine Boss, $365
May 7-10, 2009

S-230 (2004) This is a classroom course designed to produce student proficiency in the performance of duties associated with the single resource boss position from initial dispatch through demobilization to the home unit. Topics include: operational leadership, preparation and mobilization, assignment preparation, risk management, entrapment avoidance, safety and tactics, offline duties, demobilization, and post incident responsibilities.
Course prerequisites - Qualified as firefighter type 1 (FFT1).
Successful completion of Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290).

S-231 (2004) This is a skill course designed to produce student proficiency in the performance of the duties associated with engine boss, single resource (ENGB). Topics include: engine and crew capabilities and limitations, information sources, fire size-up considerations, tactics, and wildland/urban interface.
Course prerequisites - Crew Boss, Single Resource (S-230).
Qualified as a firefighter type 1 (FFT1).


S-232 Dozer Boss, $225
Oct 27-29, 2008 (1:00 pm Mon. — 5:00 pm Wed.)

(2006) This is a skill course is designed to meet the training needs of a Dozer Boss on an incident as outlined the PMS 310-1 and the Position Task Book developed for the position. Primary considerations are tactical use and safety precautions required to establish and maintain an effective dozer operation. A field exercise is required as part of the course.
Course prerequisites - Qualified as firefighter type 1 (FFT1).


S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior, $365

(2007) This is a classroom-based skills course designed to prepare the prospective supervisor to undertake safe and effective fire management operations. It is the second course in a series that collectively serves to develop fire behavior prediction knowledge and skills. This course may be presented throughout the United States. Fire environment differences are discussed as necessary, and instructor should stress local conditions.
Course prerequisites - Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190).
